Sonya Kraan

DR LEAH HEISS

Sonya Kraan is a fashion designer and academic with a particular interest in the lived experiences of creative people with chronic illnesses. She lectures at RMIT University in the School of Fashion and Textiles and her teaching practice focuses on design through making, the experiential body and textile material properties. Prior to this, Sonya ran a Melbourne based women’s wear clothing label that created transformable garments to enable the wearer to respond to changes in environments and experiences. She exhibited her collections at events including L'Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival and Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Sonya also spent many years employed in the medical industry working in a multidisciplinary pathology. She has extensive experience and a keen interest in medical diagnostic services and occupational, health and safety operations. Sonya’s research incorporates medical, creative and social science methods to further understand cognitive states and bodily perceptions of creative individuals experiencing chronic illness. Sonya is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD in the School of Fashion and Textiles at RMIT titled: ‘Dis-ease State: Illness embodiment in creative practice’.
